MANILA, Jan. 2 – Two women were killed while two others were wounded in a grenade attack in Mabusao, Capiz province on New Year's Day, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday.

Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., PNP spokesman, identified the fatalities as Ritchele Marquez, who was eight months pregnant, and Nerissa Lavado.

Cruz said Marquez sustained fatal injuries in her abdomen while Lavado was hit by the grenade blast in the head and leg.

Initial investigation said the victims were sleeping when a grenade was lobbed at their home in Barangay Libo-on, Mabusao, Capiz at around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Cruz said two other women, identified as Marinelle Marquez, 19, and Maria Sangrones, 52, were also injured in the blast.

The victims' relatives told police they believe that the attack stemmed from a rape case they filed against a member of a prominent family in their community.

PNP-Capiz Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered the safety pin of the grenade used in the attack. (PNA) DCT/scs/JCA
