CEBU CITY, Dec. 30 -– Rep. Luigi Quisumbing (Cebu, sixth district) is aiming for a “flood-free” district as a significant portion of his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) is set aside for drainage.

Quisumbing said the brief but heavy downpour almost a year ago that caused massive flooding in the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cebu made the drainage system a major concern among government officials.

”We come up with measures to make sure, no matter what happens, that the drainage system could accommodate any flooding,” he said.

Last Jan. 25, a cloudburst hit Metro Cebu and caused massive flooding in the three cities, submerging residential and commercial areas, including parts of a mall.

Last Saturday, mud floods killed thousands of residents and destroyed millions worth of farm produce and properties in Cagayan and Iligan Cities in Northern Mindanao.

The recent disasters prompted officials to underscore the need to address flooding in Metro Cebu, as millions in public funds were set aside as early as June 27.

Quisumbing allocated P15.5 million for drainage facilities in Mandaue City and Consolacion town, with some completed while the rest are nearing completion or are under construction.

He was confident the measures would ease flooding in his district. (PNA) RMA/LAM/EB/gb
