Motor racing: Bacolod passes motor racing ordinance

BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 1 — An ordinance promoting and legalizing motor racing in Bacolod City and declaring the month of September as Motor Racing Month, was passed on second reading recently by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod here.
The ordinance, authored by Councilor Carlos Jose Lopez and co-authored by Councilor Al Victor Espino, said illegal motor racing is rampant among the youth today so there is a need to closely monitor these activities and provide legal avenues to promote safe and responsible driving.
It said motor racing activities does not only focus on auto/car racing but includes flatboat racing, truck racing, and motorcycle racing, among others.
The ordinance aims to promote legal motor racing as sports tourism event to boost Bacolod's tourism industry and to recognize motor racing enthusiasts by giving them prestige and create employment.
The ordinance said the celebration of the Motor Racing Festival will be held during the month of September which coincides with the United Nations World Tourism Month.
An organizing committee composed of the city tourism officer as chairman, SP chairman of the Committee on Tourism as vice chairman and the City Engineer’s Office department head and Motor Racing Association presidents, as members will be organized to ensure that the objectives will be met.
