Archbishop calls on govt officials to lead as examples in obeying SC decisions

MANILA, Nov. 16 — A ranking Church official told government to comply with the Supreme Court order allowing former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to seek medical treatment abroad.

Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma said government officials should lead as examples in obeying court decisions.

"Well dapat lamang natin sundin ang proseso natin dito sa bansa. Kung yun ang sinasabi ng Supreme Court, we have to bow to that also," Ledesma said in a radio interview over Church-run Radyo Veritas.

For his part, San Beda Graduate School of Law dean Fr. Ranhillo Aquino said Justice secretary Leila de Lima's defiance of a Supreme Court order is embarassing for a lawyer.

"The Supreme Court says immediate executory. The moment she heard news of it, it was her duty to check with the Supreme Court whether or not a TRO have been issued. She has no intentions of abiding by the judgment of the Supreme Court and that is extremely shameful for a lawyer," he said.

Aquino said De Lima is not acting like a lawyer and must be disbarred and be cited in contempt.

"Every person who fears the law, obeys the law, cannot blatantly disobey orders from the Supreme Court like that. Kapag inumpisahan ng Secretary of Justice na balewalain ang utos ng SC, what about the rest of the officials of the land?" he said. (PNA)
