STO. TOMAS, Batangas, Nov. 9 -– Edwin Villarin, alias Ka David/Mycel/Jason, reportedly a top ranking official of the New People’s Army (NPA) allegedly committed suicide inside his vehicle at a police checkpoint here Monday afternoon, a belated police report said.

Batangas PNP provincial director Sr. Supt. Rosauro Acio said Villarin was the commanding officer of Sentro De Grabedad Pang Probinsiya ng Batangas (SGD-Komprob).

Acio said joint operatives of the Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force and Philippine National Police were conducting checkpoint operations near the STAR Toll Exit in this town when they flagged down Villarin’s vehicle, a Toyota High Ace van with plate number JOW-928 at around 3:45 p.m. Monday.

He said the police manning the checkpoint were about to serve a warrant of arrest against Villarin for illegal possession of firearm and murder when he shot himself.

Villarin was with former Alaminos mayor Samuel Bueser and driver Reynaldo Atienza. He refused to step out of the vehicle despite an order by the police manning the checkpoint, Acio said.

He said a few seconds later, a gunshot was heard inside the vehicle and police found Villarin slumped on his seat with a gunshot wound in his temple.

Bueser together with driver Atienza were invited for questioning but released later for lack of evidence linking them to the reported NPA leader.

Villarin has been tagged as the alleged killer of intelligence officer Superintendent Rodney Ramirez last July 12, and four other soldiers and two policemen in Balayan, Batangas, police said. (PNA)
