Suspect in Charice father’s slay charged with murder

SAN PEDRO, Laguna, Nov. 4 — Angel Capili Jr, suspect in the killing of Charice Pempengco’s father was charged with murder Friday morning.

Sr. Supt. Kirby Kraft, San Pedro, Laguna police chief, said Capili was formally charged with murder before the Laguna Provincial Prosecutor Office based at the Pacita Complex here.

Kraft said Capili surrendered to a baramgay chairman in General Trias, Cavite who immediately tipped off the suspect’s surrender to Mayor Luis Ferrer IV of General Trias Thursday afternoon. Mayor Ferrer turned over the suspect to the Cavite Police.

The San Pedro police chief said that Capili has admitted stabbing Ricky Pempengco with a screwdriver last Monday but said that he acted in self-defense after the estranged father of Charice allegedly punched him.

Following the killing of Pempengco in barangay Laram, this town, Capili hid in General Trias where he and his wife Wilma and family reside.

Between 1:30 p. m. to 2 p. m. Thursday, Sr. Supt. John Bulalacao, Cavite provincial police director, requested Laguna PNP provincial director Gilbert Cruz to help fetch the suspect from the Mayor Ferrer’s office and bring him to Camp Crame.

Late afternoon Thursday, Capili was transported back to San Pedro, Laguna and placed under the custody of the San Pedro police.

A P200,000 reward was raised for the arrest of Capili.

Laguna Gov. Jeorge Ejercito Estregan offered a P100,000 reward and San Pedro Mayor Calixto Cataquiz also pledged P100,000 for the arrest of Angel Capili Jr, suspected assailant of Ricky Pempengco, father of Charice, is a construction worker.

International singer Charice, daughter of the victim who arrived last Wednesday from Indonesia to pay respects to her father, appealed for justice for her father and apologized for canceling the rest of her concert tour in Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries.

“My family comes first. Whoever did this must be brought to justice. Justice must be served, not just for my father but for everyone concerned,” she said.

Charice had been estranged from her father but said they had a great relationship, even though they had not had time to bond.
