Barangay chairwoman killed, another hurt in La Union shooting

BACNOTAN, La Union, Oct. 4 — A barangay chairwoman was shot and killed and another was wounded during a basketball game at the town plaza here last Sunday evening, the police reported Tuesday.

The fatality was identified as Thelma Bucalbos, 50, Barangay Chairwoman of Calautit, Bacnotan. She died while undergoing surgery at Bethany Hospital in San Fernando City, La Union. Referee Leonardo Ursua was hit in the waist by a stray bullet. He is now out of danger.

The suspect was identified as Rolando Atenemro, 35, a resident from General Primero, Bangar, La Union.

The incident happened at 8:30 p.m. Sunday while Bucalbos and her fellow barangay officials and relatives were watching the basketball game when the suspect shot her several times at close range.

Responding policemen was able to immediately arrest the suspect and seized the caliber .45 pistol allegedly used in the shooting.

Police theorized that the gunman could be a hired killer. (PNA)
