MANILA, Aug. 4 — The Department of Health (DOH) conducted Part II of "Ehersisyo Pangkalusugan Para sa Lahat" Thursday with Filipino-American Miami Heat coach Erick Spoelstra in a high school in Tondo, Manila.

Dubbed as "Ehersisyo Para sa Lahat II-DOH with NBA in School," Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona said "health behaviors need to be taught early so that it can be carried on until adulthood."

Ona, represented by Director Irma Asuncion, DOH National Center for Health Promotion, chose the school, particularly Florentino Torres High School in Tondo, as a setting for the event, emphasizing the need to start early in promoting healthy lifestyles.

He noted that most of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are the leading causes of death, are usually associated and casually linked with four behaviors: physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, tobacco use and the harmful use of alcohol.

"Physical education and sports program, which are well within mandate of the schools, should incorporate the message of health diets and avoidance of vices," Ona said.

Spoelstra, who echoed the need to promote healthy living and physical activity, together with NBA FIT Team, conducted basketball drills, mass defense, fun games to students of Florentino Torres High School.

"Healthy living and physical activity are so important and NBA FIT is a chance for me to give back to the local community where basketball is such a passion amongst the people," Spoelstra said.

Spoelstra and the NBA FIT team partnered with DOH Secretary Ona in continuously raising awareness, especially among youth, on the importance of regular exercise and healthy diet.

The NBA Fit Program, which started in 2007, is the league's health and active lifestyle for children and adults.

They also partnered with the Food and Nutrition Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), whose aim is to improve the nutritional status of the Filipino population.

The DOH launched the "Ehersisyo Pangkalusugan Para sa Lahat" last summer in Quezon Memorial Circle with President Benigno S. Aquino III leading the event.

"There are lots of activities that people can choose from like running, biking, walking, basketball, football, swimming, and others. The important thing is that people engage in some sort of physical activity regularly," Ona said. (PNA) scs/FFC/SDT/utb
