Public school teacher hit dead in Masbate ambush

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 28 — A public school teacher was shot dead on Saturday in an ambush staged by unidentified armed men at barangay (village) Gaid in Dimasalang town in Masbate, a Philippine National Police (PNP) officer said Monday.

The victim was Genieve V. Arizala, 33, single, a public school teacher, and a resident of Cataingan town in Masbate.

Police Senior Inspector Ayn Natuel, said the victim was among the eight passengers on board a Masbate Electric Cooperative (MASELCO) service vehicle that was fired upon by unidentified armed men at around 7:15 P.M on Saturday along the national road in barangay Gaid, Dimasalang town.

Natuel, in a text message, said the victim, along with eight others, were fetched by the Maselco vehicle, driven by Dodong Patalinhug, in Masbate City and bound for Cataingan, Masbate.

While negotiating the national road in barangay Gaid, attackers strafed the vehicle and hitting the victim in her temple, Natuel said.

The victim was rushed to the Cataingan District Hospital but, at around 8:45 A.M the same day, was pronounced dead by attending physicians.

Initial investigation showed that only one bullet hit the MasElCo vehicle.

Police investigators are still determining the identities of the attackers and the motive of the attack. (PNA)
