LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 28 — Army soldiers killed a New People Army (NPA) rebel in an encounter Sunday in Barangay Villareal in Gubat town, Sorsogon province, a Philippine Army (PA) officer said Monday.

The soldiers brought the victim's body to Gubat town hall for proper identification.

Army Maj. Harold Cabunoc, 9th Infantry Division (ID) spokesperson, said the encounter took place at around 5:40 a.m. Sunday when a nine-man patrol team led by 1st Lt. Sandy Sereno was on combat operation in a bushy area of the mentioned village.

While the soldiers were on patrol, a group of NPA rebels fired at them that sparked a 10-minute gun battle where one rebel was killed and several others wounded.

The rebels, feeling that they are over powered by the soldiers, fled taking along their wounded companions and leaving their dead companion.

Recovered from the fight scene were a bandolier loaded with 12 magazines from M16 rifle with 300 rounds of bullets, 100 meters detonating wire, an improvised detonating and explosive device, two blasting caps, a hand-held radio and personal belongings. (PNA)
