LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 24 — A young New People Army (NPA) amazon was wounded and captured by Army soldiers following a brief firefight on Tuesday day in Lagonoy town in Camarines Sur, a Philippine Army (PA) report said Thursday.

The captured rebel was Darlen Palomas, alias Ka Brenda, 22, a mother and a native of Pasay City, an alleged tax collector of the communist movement operating in Camarines Sur.

Lt. Col. Ernesto Cruz, Commanding Officer of the 42nd Infantry Battalion, said that the incident took place at around 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barangay Dahat in Lagonoy town when his responding soldiers encountered two rebels engaging in extortion in the village.

“I sent two of my soldiers to verify reports about the rebel extortion activities they immediately spotted the two suspected rebels who were riding in tandem on board a Rusi motorcycle,” said Cruz.

According to Cruz, the soldiers tried to stop the motorcycle, the rebels suddenly stopped and fired their weapons at the soldier that led to a five-minute firefight, hitting the woman who was left behind by her male companion.

The soldiers confiscated a Cal .45 pistol and live ammunition from her possession, cellphone and Rusi motorcycle from the suspect.

The suspect was first taken to 9th Infantry Division infirmary for first aid and later transferred to a hospital in Naga City. (PNA)
