MANILA, Feb. 8 –- An eyewitness to the apparent suicide of former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes said the latter was heard uttering the word “sorry” minutes before he was seen slumped with a gunshot wound near the grave of his mother at the Loyola Memorial Park (LMP) in Marikina City Tuesday morning.

Feliciano Recorba, a contractual maintenance staff at the LMP, said he rushed to help Reyes upon seeing him dropping to the ground after the sound of a gunfire.

According to Recorba, the apology could have been meant for Reyes' two children who were with him at the LMP during a visit at the tomb of the former Defense chief's mother.

Recorba said Reyes was also holding a book titled "Trump: The Art of the Deal," before he allegedly committed suicide.

Reyes became Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff from 1999 to 2001. Shortly after his retirement from the military service on March 1, 2001, he was appointed as Defense Secretary by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. (PNA) scs/JCA
