MANILA, Feb. 7 -– President Benigno Aquino III on Monday urged all government institutions to support the forthcoming peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and National Democratic Front (NDF).

In his memorandum read aloud Monday morning during the flag raising ceremonies in government offices, all employees have been invited to actively participate in gatherings and activities supportive of the peace process.

“My fellow workers in government, for decades our country has been mired in violent encounters. These armed conflicts have already given rise to much sorrow, fear, division, and ill will toward our fellow Filipinos. We know that we cannot go on as one country until we achieve peace,” the memorandum said.

“This month, we have been given the opportunity to engage in peace talks between the government and the MILF and the CPP-NPA-NDF. Let us support the talks between the peace panels. Together let us show the whole nation, and the whole world, this government’s pressing desire for peace.”

Further, the President’s memorandum announced that on “February 8, Tuesday, at 7 in the evening, candles will be lit in front of houses in support of the peace talks.”

This candle lighting event, dubbed as “Ilaw ng Kapayapaan” (Light of Peace), is expected to gather more than 2,000 peace advocates from various sectors of society.

Jointly organized by civil society organizations and government agencies, the activity will be held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle where a simple ceremony highlighted by an interfaith prayer, ringing of the Peace Bell and flying of wish lanterns will take place at 6:15 p.m.

“Next Monday, we will start the signature campaign for peace in localities, in branches of government, in schools, and in NGOs,” the memorandum added.

“Together, let us show the light that only peace can bring,” it said. (PNA)
