CEBU CITY, JAN. 27 – The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 has placed the entire Central Visayas under red alert following the bombing of a passenger bus in Makati Tuesday afternoon that killed five people and injured 13 others.

Security was immediately beefed up at terminals, seaports, airports and other vital installations in the region.

But Sr. Supt. Louie Oppus, deputy regional director for operations of PRO 7, said the tightened security in the region should not be a reason for the public to be scared.

Oppus said there are no terrorist threats in the region but the declaration of a red alert was were intended to enhance security in the region.

Cebu Provincial Police Office (CCPO) Director Erson Digal said he deployed Special Reaction Unit (SRU) personnel to the Cebu South Bus Terminal to help in the inspection of the passengers’ luggage.

He refused to divulge the exact number of police personnel deployed at the terminal for security reasons.

Digal said he was confident that what happened in the country’s financial district would not happen at the South Bus Terminal.

Operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics in Mandaue City were also deployed at the North Bus Terminal to augment the existing security personnel.

Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Director Noel Gillamac said they have also tapped the K-9 unit of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to sweep the terminal from possible explosive devices and preempt any attempts of bombings at the terminal.

Gillamac said mobile patrols were also stationed in strategic areas of the terminal.

He assured that despite the beefing up of the security of the terminal, their anti-criminality operations continue.

Mactan Cebu International Airport general manager Nigel Paul Villarete also ordered a stricter security measures at the airport.

Vehicles going to the airport are subjected to visual search on top of the bomb-sniffing dogs deployed at the checkpoint area on the road leading to the airport, about 500 meters away from the terminal.

He appealed for understanding from the public as this is done for the security of the country’s busiest airport outside Manila.

Security was also tightened at the different passenger terminals at the Cebu port. (PNA)
