Bomb threat turns out a hoax shortly before DepEd activity starts

DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 27 – A bomb threat in Sibulan, Negros Oriental turned out to be a hoax as the Department of Education is at press time holding an activity with DepEd Undersecretary Yolanda Quijano, congressmen and other bigwigs attending.

Sketchy reports released by the police say the venue, in front of the Sibulan municipal hall, has already been cleared.

Provincial police director Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas, in a text message, said the Explosives Ordinance Division/Special Weapons and Tactics (EOD-SWAT) team of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office conducted sweeping operations of the venue and declared it clear shortly before the program started at 9 a.m. Thursday.

No other details were given yet as to the source of the bomb threat.

The activity is the SEAMEO INNOTECH Visit, a program of the DepEd, which is being attended SEAMEO Rep. Yolanda de Alas, former Rep. Herminio Teves of the 3rd district (Negros Oriental), Rep. George Arnaiz (2nd district, Negros Oriental), Rep. Henry Teves of the 3rd district, local government officials and school officials.

The hoax bomb threat comes as the PNP has been declared on full alert nationwide following Tuesday’s bomb attack on a passenger bus in Makati City that left four people dead and 14 other passengers injured.

The police will issue a full investigation report later today. (PNA)
