Police, Army nab suspect in ambush of 2 soldiers in Maguindanao

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao, Jan. 18 — Alert police and soldiers arrested on Monday night a man who ambushed and wounded two members of the military's 6th Infantry Battalion in South Upi, Maguindanao.

Col. Prudencio Asto, 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the soldiers, Cpl. Jerry Domingo and Pfc. Jeffrey Calunsag, both of Alpha Company, 6th IB, were riding in tandem on a motorbike from a videoke bar in Poblacion Upi heading toward their command post when ambushed by the gunmen.

One of the suspects was arrested and later identified as Bert Bernales, a resident of Upi, who yielded a cal. 9mm pistol.

His companions remained at large.

The two soldiers sustained minor injuries and are being treated at the South Upi Municipal hospital.

Initial police investigation showed that prior to the ambush, the two soldiers had an altercation with another group of men inside the videoke house.

It was not known what triggered the heated discussion.

Police is readying charges of illegal possession of firearms and frustrated murder against Bernales and several John Does. (PNA)
