ILOILO CITY, Jan. 14 – Spectators, revelers, dance participants, artists and sponsors will form the bulk of the expected more than 1.2 million people to converge in this southern city on January 21-23 as the Dinagyang Festival reaches its climax.

This was disclosed by Ramon Cua Locsin, chairman of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI), as his modest estimate of the crowd and participants to the country’s premier tourist attraction.

Locsin admitted that he could not possibly know the exact number of people coming here to witness the festival events. But fully booked hotels including resorts and pension houses outside the city one week before the festival highlights speak of the estimated Dinagyang crowd.

More than 50 special events including the main events such as Kasadyahan and Ati-atihan competitions have made Dinagyang a festival of the people and Ilonggos' pride. Religion and veneration to the Sto. Niño image cement the people’s beliefs and the fun and frolic dubbed as “dagyang” where the word Dinagyang came from.

Locsin said Dinagyang showcases the pride of the Ilonggos as the country’s best festival and as a binding factor that unites all Ilonggos throughout the world to come home and enjoy the festivities.

The festival is now on its 43rd year of existence and never ceased to mesmerize the spectators and revelers every year. (PNA) LAP/AJP/LCPendon/vlo
