BI creates special team to hunt down foreigners in smuggling

MANILA, Dec. 28 –The Bureau of Immigration created an elite team that will track down foreigners involved in the smuggling of illegal aliens into the country.

BI Acting Commissioner Ronaldo Ledesma on Tuesday said the special team, composed of seasoned intelligence agents and immigration officers, would also go after foreigners and other persons involved in the trafficking of Filipinos abroad, especially women.

Ledesma said the fight against human trafficking was a concerted effort of all government agencies involved, thus, the creation of the BI Trafficking in Persons Unit (TPU).

He also confirmed intelligence reports that some undesirable foreigners from Asian countries lead syndicates involved in the smuggling of illegal aliens in and out of the Philippines, and in the trafficking of Filipinos to various countries worldwide.

”We are sending a strong signal to these syndicates, particularly the foreigners that manage, finance and operate them, that there will be no letup in bureau’s heightened campaign against human trafficking,” Ledesma said. (PNA) RMA/FMB
