MANILA, Deember 27 – More than 160,000 prohibited firecrackers have already been confiscated by the Philippine National Police (PNP) during continuing operations throughout the country since the start of Christmas Season on December 16.

PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said that more than 168,000 illegal and prohibited firecrackers have been seized during a series of police operations nationwide.

According to Cruz, Region 11 or Davao Region recorded the highest confiscation with 107,570 firecrackers.

“Since the start of Simbang Gabi (December 16), a total of more than 168,000 illegal and prohibited firecrackers were confiscated by our personnel, Davao Region tops the list,” said Cruz.

Metro Manila or the National Capital Region (NCR) came in second with more or less 30,000 seized illegal firecrackers while Region 7 or Cebu was third with 13,000 confiscated firecrackers; Region 8 registered 7,000; Region 1 with 6,175 and Region 5 with 5,000.

As of press time Monday, a total of 168,745 illegal and prohibited firecrackers have already been confiscated by the PNP.

Meanwhile, Cruz reiterated the PNP’s reminder to the public to refrain from using prohibited firecrackers to avoid any untoward incident during the celebration of New Year.

Cruz particularly called on parents to keep watch for their children who usually fall victims to illegal firecrackers.

“Based on our records, 70 percent of the victims of firecracker incidents were children from 13 years old and below,” said Cruz.

”That is why the PNP is reminding parents to keep watching their children to avoid accidents brought by firecrackers,” added Cruz.

Among the firecrackers prohibited are piccolo and watusi, which usually victimized children; super lolo, mother rocket, pla-pla, and bin laden. (PNA) LAP/MM
