CEBU CITY, Dec. 23 – The Cebu City Council wants the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to ensure that sea vessels are not overcrowded this Christmas season.

The City Council expects many people to go home to their provinces for the holidays and many of them will be traveling by boat.

”Every time there is an opportunity for travel, especially during the holidays, people —especially students— travel by sea in going home to spend their much-awaited school break,” the resolution penned by Councilor Nida Cabrera read.

The council, in a resolution, said some shipping companies take advantage of the increase in passenger traffic and allow their vessels to take more than their capacity.

Cabrera said about 80 percent of sea mishaps are caused by human error and negligence, which includes going beyond the maximum number of passengers allowed.

”Domestic maritime service has been marred by sea mishaps primarily brought about by overloading of passengers and cargoes,” the council resolution read. (PNA)
