ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec. 18 — Tugbungan, a barangay located five kilometers east of this city, bested all other barangays and emerged as the grand winner of the Christmas landmark competition.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said the landmark entry of Barangay Tugbungan, consisting of a giant Christmas Tree in the midst of a pond and a Belen, received P75,000 cash prize and a trophy.

The landmark competition is an annual contest among this city's 98 barangays with the concept that the participating barangays are to be decked with Christmas symbols and other decorations in an area of at least 500 square meters prominently located along the main road.

The landmarks are being judged according to the following criteria: concept, 40 percent; artistry/craftsmanship, 30 percent; widest coverage of Christmas lights, 20 percent; and, impact, 10 percent.

The landmark competition is part of this city's celebration of Pascua na Zamboanga (Christmas in Zamboanga).

Following second to Tugbungan is Barangay Sta. Maria with landmark consisting of a giant Christmas Tree surrounded by several palm trees bedecked with bright Christmas lights.

The barangay of Sta. Maria received P60,000 plus a trophy.

Third, fourth and fifth placers are the barangays of Tetuan, Tumaga and Cabatangan, respectively.

The three barangays received P50,000, P30,000 and P20,000 plus trophies, respectively.

Lobregat said the awarding of the prizes was held last Wednesday at the Plaza del Pilar, the newest park in this southern port city. (PNA)
