MANILA, Dec. 10 – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now coordinating with various government agencies in its campaign against proliferation of illegal firecrackers during the Holiday Season.

This early, PNP chief Director General Raul Bacalzo said the 135,000-strong police organization was in constant coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Department of Health (DOH) and the local government units.

”We have issued directive for our policemen to be strict in implementing our drive against illegal firecrackers,” said Bacalzo.

Bacalzo also called on local government officials to identify firecracker zones in their respective places to prevent untoward incident during the celebration of the Holiday Season.

The chief PNP cited Davao City where there has been no casualty due to firecrackers during the previous Christmas Seasons.

”It might not be possible to have total firecracker free zone, we could have designated firecracker zones,” said Bacalzo.

With designated firecracker zones, Bacalzo said that authorities, including police and local government officials, can easily safeguard the area to prevent casualty and untoward incident like fire.

”That’s why I have told our chiefs of police to get in touch with the mayors in their respective areas of jurisdiction for proper coordination,” said Bacalzo.

Bacalzo also reminded police personnel to refrain from firing their service firearms and any other guns during the Holiday Season.

”I am reminding our men that unauthorized discharge of firearms is illegal,” said Bacalzo, noting the continuing downtrend of such incident during the past years.

”We hope that it will go down further this year,” said Bacalzo.

Bacalzo warned that violators would face grave misconduct charge, which is a dismissible offense. (PNA) RMA/MM
