JBC comes up with shortlist of nominees for CA, Sandiganbayan justice posts

MANILA, Nov. 24 — The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has come up with its shortlist of nominees for the positions of associate justice of the Court of Appeals (CA) and the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan, respectively.
The JBC is an independent constitutional body that accepts and screens applicants to the positions in the Judiciary, as well as the Ombudsman and the Deputy Ombudsman.
The shortlist was made after the voting for the single vacant position in the Sandiganbayan and three vacant positions in the CA.
During the voting, those who garnered the highest number of votes for the position of CA associate justice were Manila City Prosecutor Joe Lopez, with six votes; Pedro Corrales, Renato Francisco, Divinagracia Ongkeko and Victoria Isabel Paredes, all of which got five votes each.
They were selected from the 58 applicants aspiring to become the next CA associate justice.
Both Assistant Solicitor General Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and Rafael Lagos got six votes each while Bernelito Fernandez earned five votes for the single vacant position at the anti-graft court.
They were chosen from the 38 applicants.
The shortlist of nominees will be submitted by the JBC to the Office of the President (OP) any day this week.
The President has a period of 90 days within which to fill up the vacancy in the Judiciary. (PNA) LOR/PTR
