TUGUEGARAO CITY, Sept. 23 — Five persons died and two others injured in a vehicular accident involving a Starex van and a 10- wheeler truck along the national highway in Barangay Piggatan, Alcala, Cagayan before dawn Thursday.

Police Senior Supt. Mao Aplasca, Cagayan police director, identified three of the fatalities as Starex van driver Salvador Doniego of Buguey, Cagayan; passengers, Benedicto De Leon and Ileen Robles. The two other fatalities have remained unidentified due to lack of identification cards, all died on the spot.

Two other survivors —Randy Batobalanos and a certain Felipe, who sustained fractures, were taken to the Cagayan Valley Medical Center in Tuguegarao City.

Sr. Insp. Wilfredo Dupaya, Alcala town police chief, the Starex van, loaded with seven persons, was moving behind the 10–wheeler truck carrying softdrinks while they were both traveling towards the north direction at about 3 a.m. Thursday.

The van hit the truck’s rear portion while it was overtaking it, police said.

Due to the impact, the van’s driver lost control of the wheels causing the vehicle to overturn along the national highway.

Dupaya said the van came from Manila and was rented by the occupants on their way home to Cagayan.

On the other hand, the truck came from Bulacan to deliver softdrinks in the northern portion of Cagayan province.

Truck driver Florentino Felipe was placed under the custody of the Alcala police pending the filing of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and frustrated homicide charges.
