MEXICO CITY, Sept. 24 — The death toll from a mudslide that struck the town of Villa Guerrero near here has risen to 10, the town council said in a statement Thursday.

The town council ruled out any further dead being trapped in the debris of the mudslide that struck the town, some 80 km west of the capital.

The mudslide on Monday had blocked the main highway that runs through the town and crushed many cars.

Authorities have decided to stop searching for victims as local residents have not filed any new missing person reports.

In a separate statement, the authorities said that the highway struck by the mudslide had been cleared and would likely reopen soon.

Hurricane Karl struck Mexico beginning last Friday, causing various landslides and floodings as well as deaths and property damages in the country. (PNA/Xinhua)
