MANILA, Sept. 23 — Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim on Thursday awarded 18 officers and policemen of the Northern Police District (NPD) with Certificates of Recognition for their courage and heroism in the re-taking of People's Television 4 (PTV 4) on Aug. 27, 1987 during the sixth coup attempt by rebel soldiers against then President Corazon Aquino.

Rebel soldiers gained control of PTV-4, now National Television Network (NBN Channel 4) which was then located at Bohol Avenue in Quezon City (the site now occupied by ABS-CBN).

Lim, then the NPD chief, led his men and volunteers in recovering PTV-4 and the nearby Camelot Hotel which was also occupied by rebel soldiers.

The simple awarding ceremony was held at the Bulwagang Villegas in Manila City Hall.

The awardees were P/Major Edgardo Avendaño, P/Lt. Jaime Peralta, P/Lt. Reynaldo Roldan, P/Sgt. Eduardo Tabao, P/Cpl. Pacifico Alandy, Pcf. Alfredo Pascual, Pcf. Policarpio Cadsawan, Pcf. Rodolfo Jaraza, Pat. Juanito Fabre, Pat. Francisco Pantoja, Pat. Carlito Mangaoang, Pat. Carlos Altivo, Pat. Antonio Disuanco, Pat. Joel Sioson, Pat. Levi Sevilla, Gen. Rodolfo Garcia, and Major Josefina Caspellan.

A posthumous award was given to Sergeant Eduardo Esguerra, the lone casualty in that historic event. Bohol Avenue was later renamed Sgt. Esguerra Avenue.

Last August 28, a commemorative program and photo exhibit on the re-taking of PTV-4, and a tribute to Esguerra was held at the Manila Police District. (PNA) vcs/JES
