MANILA, Sept. 23 – Alarmed by the threat of illegal drugs, Senator Edgardo Angara said on Thursday that he would initiate a Senate inquiry into the problem which is bigger than the jueteng controversy.

”This jueteng is just a sideshow. The main show is our battle against illegal drugs because the law enforcers said almost Filipino families are affected by the drug menace. So this is a bigger problem,” Angara said.

Angara said that after the jueteng investigation, the government should refocus its attention on the problem of illegal drugs.

”We take appropriate report, take immediate action, we will move into drugs. I think we should engage the public, public schools system, socio civic groups, business community… that we are killing the next generation,” he said.

Angara, chair of the Senate committee on education, said the government’s effort to improve the educational system would become futile if the drugs menace will not be addressed by the concerned government agencies.

”Whatever improvement we will implement in our educational system would become useless if our youth are drug addicts,” Angara said.

Angara said he would file a Senate resolution calling for the investigation on the effects of the illegal drugs in the country. (PNA)
