MANILA, Sept. 15 -– Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said on Wednesday that the Senate won’t investigate the jueteng money allegedly donated to the church, saying it is the domain of the Vatican.

”Why we will investigate that? It should be investigated by saint Pope,” Enrile said in an interview by the Senate media.

Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz, head of the People’s Crusade Against Jueteng, alleged that at least eight dioceses in Luzon and the Visayas are accepting money from “jueteng” operators as donations.

”If it is true, that is news,” the veteran lawmaker from Cagayan Valley region.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III said it would be difficult to determine whether or not the money being donated to the church came from the illegal gambling like jueteng.

”It would be difficult to stop. Do you think the church would ask you if the donated money came from illegal source? Does the church know if the donations came from the jueteng? It would be difficult to scrutinize,” Sotto said.

Sotto said the jueteng money donated to the church is not an issue.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago recently filed a resolution for the Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate allegations by Archbishop Cruz that certain personalities close to President Benigno Aquino are actively participating or receiving monthly “kickbacks” from jueteng operators. (PNA) LOR/jfm
