Enrile defends Lacson over ethics complaint

MANILA, Sept. 15 –- Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile defended on Wednesday senator Panfilo Lacson, saying that his colleague is not abandoning his works in the Senate.

Enrile made his comment in reaction to the ethics complaint filed by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) last Tuesday against the fugitive senator.

”He is not abandoning, so far as I know. Only that he has not come back because there is a pending warrant against him. When he comes back he will be arrested anyway, so how can you say that he has abandoned his office?,” Enrile said.

However, Enrile vowed to study the ethics complaint of the VACC against Lacson in connection with the twin killing of former publicist Salvador "Bubby" Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito in November 2000.

VACC chairman Dante Jimenez alleged in the complaint that Lacson may have committed unethical conduct after the senator has been implicated in the Dacer-Corbito murder.

The VACC also questioned the continued absence of Lacson in the Senate session, depriving the people of representation in the Senate.

The ethics complaint has been at the office of the Senate ethics committee chaired by minority leader senator Alan Peter Cayetano.

Lacson left the country last January, several days after a court issued a warrant of arrest against the Cavite lawmaker in connection with his involvement in the twin killing. (PNA) V3/jfm
