MANILA, Sept. 13 — President Benigno S. Aquino III picked the third man in the Philippine National Police (PNP) heirarchy to replace outgoing PNP director-general Jesus Versoza.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda on Monday night confirmed to Philippine News Agency (PNA) that President Aquino named Deputy Director-General Raul Bacalzo, the current PNP deputy chief for operations, as replacement of Versoza.

Versoza is supposed to retire on December 25 but he opted for early retirement to give chance to younger officers to the PNP leadership.

The PNP chief had informed the President about his plan to leave the service before the August 23 Manila hostage crisis occurred.

President Aquino will witness the turnover ceremony of the PNP leadership on Tuesday at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Versoza recommended to President Aquino through Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo the next three highest officials in the PNP as his possible successor.

Aside from Bacalzo, Versoza also recommended Deputy Director General Perfecto Palad who heads the PNP’s administration office and Deputy Director General Benjamin Belarmino Jr. who is the current chief directorial staff.

According to Versoza, all three PNP officials are very much qualified to be the next PNP chief.

Bacalzo, Palad and Belarmino are all members of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1977.

Of the three, Palad is the most senior and the first to be promoted to a three-star rank and is due to retire on April 2011. Bacalzo will be retiring on September 2011 and Belarmino on March 2012. (PNA)
