MANILA, Sept. 9 – Minority Senator Pia Cayetano supported the decision of President Benigno S. Aquino III to hold a press conference on Thursday to explain his thoughts on the botched hostage crisis last August 23 in front of the Quirino Grandstand at Rizal Park.

"By conducting a press conference, it appears that President Benigno Aquino III is reaching out to the people through media to explain his thoughts on the Manila hostage crisis,” Cayetano said in a press statement.

Cayetano also agreed with the President that his media appearance would not in any way affect the ongoing investigation of the incident investigation and review committee (IIRC) led by Department of Justice (DOJ).

”He has already said that his statements will not in any way affect ongoing efforts by the government led by the Department of Justice in coming up with a swift, fair and credible conclusion to this issue, and I believe him,” the lady lawmaker said.

Meanwhile, Senator Francis Escudero questioned why it was the President who explained the government side on the hostage crisis that claimed the lives of nine people including eight foreign tourists from Hong Kong.

Escudero said that it should be Presidential Communications and Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma who should have spoken for the President.

But according to Coloma, it was the President who insisted to face the public through the press conference attended by media personalities from the country’s leading television networks. (PNA)
