MANILA, Sept. 6 –- Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Jesus Verzosa has directed all police commanders in Mindanao to closely monitor security situation in the region to thwart any retaliatory attacks from the Abu Sayyaf group after the killing of three terrorists in Sulu.

Immediately after the successful police operation against a band of ASG terrorists, led by Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Gafur Jumdail, in Maimbung town shortly before midnight on Saturday, Verzosa ordered on Sunday the raising of alert level to full in the whole of Mindanao.

PNP spokesman Sr. Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said the PNP chief is reiterating the order to all police commanders, giving emphasis to securing vital installations in Mindanao.

Cruz said Verzosa also ordered the intensified checkpoint operations.

”In relation to the special instruction of the chief PNP reiterating the full alert status in Mindanao, all unit commanders at all levels are hereby directed to conduct a systematic visual inspections and security checks of vital installations, checkpoints and other PNP security related activities,” said Cruz.

As part of the instruction, Cruz said the chief PNP asked for daily assessment of the situation from the PNP’s Directorate for Intelligence.

”ODI (Office of the Directorate for Intelligence) is tasked to regularly assess the threat situation. All PNP unit commanders are required to render report of activities regarding this instruction to ODO (Office of the Directorate for Operations) not later than 8 a.m. everyday,” said Cruz.

At around 12 midnight Saturday, combined elements of the PNP’s Directorate for Integrated Police Operations-Western Mindanao (DIPO-WM), under Director Angelo Sunglao, and elite Special Action Force (SAF) engaged a band of Abu Sayyaf terrorists that resulted in the killing of three, including Jumdail.

Jumdail is a brother of top Abu Sayyaf commander Abu Jumdail, alias Doctor Abu.

Initial reports showed that Jemaah Islamiyah operative Marwan was also targeted during the operation.

However, it was not clear whether the JI militant was present during the firefight. (PNA)
