MANILA, Aug. 28 — The La Union Provincial Police Office (LUPPO) completed on Friday a five-day search and rescue (SAR) training conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in San Fernando City, La Union.

The PCG conducted the training for the personnel of LUPPO, including on how to operate rubber boats, after about 20 percent of La Union province got flooded at the height of typhoon "Pepeng" last year, Commodore Athelo Ybanez, PCG-Northern Luzon District (NLD) commander, said on Saturday.

La Union was among the northern Luzon provinces hardest hit by the powerful typhoon in October 2009.

"The typhoon’s heavy rains caused floods and landslides,” Ybanez said.

A total of 39 police personnel from LUPPO and 10 from PCG-NLD participated in the district cross-training with the PCG Special Operations Group (SOG) composed of divers.

“We just concluded Friday the five-day training on Water Search and Rescue and Rubber Boat Operations and Maintenance (WASAR-RBOM) Training Course. The training was held from August 23 until August 27 in San Fernando, La Union,” he said.

According to Ybanez, the participants were trained on how to become competent rescuers in water-related disasters. The PCG also provided lectures and practical exercises focused on life-saving rescue techniques and rubber boat operations and maintenance.

“The training also developed self-confidence, determination, teamwork and camaraderie among the participants who may eventually be working together in future water search and rescue operations,” he said.

The PCG official said that in preparation for a possible onslaught of heavy rains during this rainy season, the “local government unit of La Union purchased two rubber boats and rescue equipment.” (PNA) scs/JES
