TANAUAN, Batangas, Aug. 28 – The remains of hostage-taker police Sr. Insp. Rolando Mendoza was laid to rest at a public cemetery here at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Many sympathizers, friends and family attended the funeral of the dismissed policeman who hijacked a bus in Manila and took 21 Hong Kong tourists and four Filipinos hostage last Monday, Aug. 23 at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

The about 11-hour hostage crisis left eight Hong Kong tourists and the hostage-taker dead.

A Catholic priest did not bless Mendoza’s casket and was buried by his relatives at the public cemetery here.

This happened even as the government distanced itself from the incident. Close to a hundred people gathered at the Mendoza home, to remember him for his police honors and not for Monday's tragic event.

The Mendoza family thanked the media and the public as well. They refused to comment further after the burial. (PNA) RMA/JCA
