2 wounded in Agusan del Sur gunbattle

STA. JOSEFA, Agusan del Sur, Aug. 27 - An Army soldier and a civilian guide were wounded in a gunbattle Wednesday between government force and some 30 heavily armed New Peoples Army (NPA) rebels at Tagmanoro area, Barangay Sayon, Sta. Josefa town, Agusan del Sur province, police reported Friday.
The police report identified the wounded soldier as Pfc. Herbert B. Balodon. The civilian guide is still unidentified.
The wounded were brought to D.O.P. Memorial Hospital in Patin-ay, Prosperidad town, also in Agusan del Sur.
Police said the encountered rebels were members of ground force of guerrilla-Front Committee 3 of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC).
Initial report coming from the Agusan del Sur Provincial Police Office (PPO) and Sta. Josefa Municipal Police Station (MPS) stated that one Platoon of Charlie Company of the 26th Infantry Battalion (26th IB) and platoon of 42nd DRC were conducting security operation when they encountered some 30 heavily armed communists at 6:45 a.m. at Tagmanoro area.
A 25-minute firefight ensued after which the enemy withdrew towards Northwest direction.
Government troops recovered two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing one kg each, seven backpacks, subversive documents, one empty magazine for 7.62 mm rifle, bandolier for Garand rifle with empty clips and personal belongings of the NPAs.
The troops are still conducting pursuit operation against the fleeing enemies.
In another development, undetermined number of communist terrorists harassed the patrol base of 13th Regional Public Safety Battalion based at Langkilaan area, Barangay Maitum, Trento town, also in Agusan del Sur.
The attack happened at 8:20 p.m. Thursday.
There were no reported casualties in the incident. (PNA)
