COTABATO CITY, Aug. 26 – Police authorities here seized eight firearms from suspected lawless elements in an intensified drive against criminality this month.

Sr. Supt. Willy Dangane, city police director, said the drive came about after an order from City Mayor Japal Guiani Jr. to rid the locality of criminals, including kidnap and extortion groups, under the police’s “Oplan Sita” and “Oplan Kapkap Bakal.”

“Loose firearms still proliferate in the city. This is just the start of our renewed campaign in curbing criminality here,” Dangane said.

He noted that those found in possession the seized firearms are currently in jail pending charges readied against them in court.

Latest police records indicate that some 2,000 unlicensed firearms remain in the hands of unlicensed gun holders in the city.

Dangane said city cops also managed to collar on Wednesday two robbery suspects for stealing P40,000 worth of copper wire cables from the local Smart Communications Company; and a farmer slapped with incest and statutory rape cases for impregnating his 14-year-old daughter.

The rape victim, according to the police official, gave birth at a local hospital last Aug. 19.

Dangane said the rape suspect, identified as Rey Narcida of North Upi, Maguindanao, was nabbed after the disclosure made by his daughter.

On Aug. 16, kidnappers clad in military fatigue uniforms struck and snatched Filipino-Chinese trader Nelson Tai, 45, while inside his establishment along Don Rufino Alonzo St. here.

The victim was freed three days later at a secluded area in nearby Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, after his family paid the kidnappers of a considerable sum of money for “board and lodging” while in captivity.(PNA)
