MANILA, Aug. 15 — Mayor Alfredo S. Lim has ordered Manila's barangay officials to always monitor and ensure that all streetlights installed in their areas are not vandalized or stolen.

The mayor issued the order as he led other city officials in lighting up recently the entire stretch of Jose Abad Santos Avenue from Claro M. Recto in Divisoria to Hermosa Street in Tondo.

The illumination of streets, bridges, parks and public places in the city is part of the urban planning and rehabilitation/improvement of life programs and all-out war against criminality under the 11-point agenda of Lim’s administration.

The mayor said the lighting of Jose Abad Santos Avenue will allow the residents and travelers to confidently pass by the area without fear of being accosted by criminal elements.

Lim also told the police precinct commanders present during the occasion that he hoped the lighting up of the streets would provide greater visibility in the community to help the police in preventing crimes.

Among those with Lim during the switching on of the streetlights were Manila Second District Councilor Ruben F. Buenaventura and the mayor's Chief of Staff, Ricardo de Guzman. (PNA) scs/JES
