Germany provides P12-M for disaster prevention in 12 vulnerable RP provinces

MANILA, Aug. 2 — The Government of Germany on Monday announced a grant of about P12 million (Euro200,000) to fund a disaster prevention project involving 72 communities in 12 Philippine provinces that are most vulnerable to typhoons of such scale as Ondoy and Pepeng.

The latest grant concludes a project which started in April 2009, and involved the training of locals on evacuation center management, emergency health and disaster prevention in the case of typhoons, floods and landslides, and were accompanied by emergency drills, hazard mapping and the establishment of an early warning system.

The communities were equipped with training materials and emergency equipment.

The project was implemented in the country's eastern provinces which are deemed most vulnerable to typhoons and considered marginalized communities.

These are in Surigao del Sur and Norte, Agusan del Norte, Northern and Eastern Samar, Bicol, Quezon, Aurora, Quirino and Isabela.

Funding was channeled through one of Germany’s humanitarian aid organization, the Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.

In announcing the grant amid the typhoon season in the Philippines, the German embassy said that “the lessons learned by the Disaster Prevention Committees and the local residents were put to a test when the three major typhoons Ondoy, Pepeng and Santi hit the country during the project implementation last year.”

How the locals successfully coped with the problem “proved that the project was a success and that preparing communities in mitigating the effects of natural calamities,” is crucial, the embassy added. (PNA)
