Cagayan Rep. Vargas dies, 79 (Obit)

TUGUEGARAO CITY, July 23 – Rep. Florencio Vargas of the second district of Cagayan died early morning on Friday at the age of 79 due to kidney complications at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City.

The reelected congressman, known as Enciong by his peers, was reportedly bed-ridden after the elections due to kidney failure.

His son, Melvin Vargas, confirmed that his father died.

The congressman's remains will be brought to their hometown in Abulug in Cagayan on July 28.

The elder Vargas, a Lakas-Kampi-CMD stalwart, first won as congressman of the second district in 2004, reelected in 2007 and won over former Gov. Edgar Lara in 2010 for his unfinished third consecutive term.

Prior to being a lawmaker, Vargas also served as barangay captain of Centro Abulug, Cagayan from 1970 to 1980, Abulug mayor from 1980 to 1986 and 1988 to 1991, vice governor from 1994 to 1998 and governor of Cagayan from 1998 to 2001.

Vargas was born on Nov. 7, 1931 in Abulug, Cagayan.

He was married to Illuminada Vargas, now a retired teacher, and they settled in Caritan, Tuguegarao City. (PNA)
