MANILA, July 20 – More than P 5 million worth of properties were damaged in a fire that hit a shantytown behind the Department of Agriculture (DA) building on Tuesday afternoon, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said.

Alcala told reporters the blaze damaged DA’s motorpool and records sections as well as the Bureau of Soils (BS) office.

“We will have a hard time in retrieving the records affected by the fire. Tomorrow, Wednesday, we will call for a meeting to fix the damaged papers,” Alcala said.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Quezon City said the fire occurred at the back of DA at the corner of North Avenue and Elliptical Road, Sitio Planas, Barangay VASRA, Diliman, Quezon City at 12:30 p.m.

It destroyed at least 200 shanties and damaging a building of the Agriculture department.

The blaze caused a big traffic jam in the area as residents or informal settlers were evacuated at the nearby Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center.

BFP-QC pegged the alarm to Task Force Charlie and then declared fire-out by 4 p.m. (PNA) RMA/JCA
