Robredo calls for systematic approach vs 'jueteng'

MANILA, July 14 – Newly-installed Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo said on Wednesday that total eradication of the illegal numbers game "jueteng" needs a “systematic” approach.

During his first visit to the Philippine National Police (PNP) National Headquarters in Camp Crame as DILG chief, Robredo admitted that "jueteng" could not be addressed overnight.

”I think there is no magic as far as jueteng is concerned,” said Robredo, who was tasked by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III to look into the perennial jueteng problem.

Robredo also said he personally attempted to drive away jueteng in Naga City during his incumbency as mayor but did not totally win the war against the illegal gambling.

”I’ve tried a number of times in the city but it was touch-and-go, that’s why I think there should be a more systematic approach,” he said.

Robredo said he will work closely with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to properly assess the problem to come up with the right approach.

”So, tomorrow, we will pay PCSO a visit and get an assessment of what is happening on the ground, and we will do the right solution to the problem at hand,” he added. (PNA) scs/MM
