Singson orders review of road safety standards

MANILA, July 8 — With the spate of road accidents along the national roads in Cebu province, Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio L. Singson ordered the review of the current road safety standards.

Singson inspected the four accident sites in the municipalities of Balamban and Sogod and in Toledo City. Singson found out, however, that the road sections conform to the criteria specified for national roads.

Although the established reasons of the accidents were due to human error and vehicle malfunctioning, Singson still ordered the DPWH in Cebu to widen the critical sharp curves section of these roads and install additional road safety devices such as concrete barriers, "rumble strips", warning signs and other road signages using the Motor Vehicle User's Charge (MVUC) funds.

Singson will also ask the Department of Interior and Local Governments and the local government units to strictly enforce the easement or road right-of-way along the national roads and order illegal structures to move back outside the road right-of-way.

"Maybe, we shall ask to be deputized to enforce the clearing of these illegal structures along the road right-of-way," Singson said.(PNA) RMA/LBV
