DSWD assistant secretary dies

MANILA, July 6 — Social Welfare and Development Assistant Secretary Ruel G. Lucentales succumbed to cardiac arrest on July 5 after attending the flag-raising ceremonies at the DSWD Central office in Batasan Hills, Quezon City. He was 56 years old.

Assistant Secretary Lucentales served the DSWD with commitment and professionalism for 39 years, having started as a welfare aide in 1973 to his present position as Assistant Secretary handling Visayas and Mindanao cluster of DSWD Field Offices.

Likewise, he was the Deputy National Project Director of the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan – Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) from 2003 until his death.

Assistant Secretary Lucentales was an authority on Visayas and Mindanao matters having worked with various local and international organizations in uplifting the plight of internally-displaced persons in the Mindanao region.

Born in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat, Assistant Secretary Lucentales exemplified excellence in his academic and professional life. He obtained his Masters Degree in Social Work at the College of Social Work and Community Development, University of the Philippines, and later on reaped numerous academic awards and scholarships.

He became a scholar of the Notre Dame Educational Association where he graduated magna cum laude at the Notre Dame College as well as a Colombo Plan scholar of the International Training Institute in Sydney, Australia.

Assistant Secretary Lucentales ably represented the DSWD in several international trainings, conferences, and conventions.

Before he became Assistant Secretary, he was DSWD regional director of Region XI for 12 years.

Assistant Secretary Lucentales lies in state at Ascension Chapel, Arlington Memorial Chapels, #12 Gregorio Araneta Avenue, Quezon City and will be brought to the DSWD Central Office, IBP Road, Batasan Hills, Quezon City on July 8, 2010 for a Necrological Service at 4:00 pm.

His body will be flown to Davao City on Friday, July 9. Interment will be at Davao Memorial Park on Sunday, July 11 at 1:00 pm.

He is survived by his wife, Cecilia Almasa – Lucentales and children, Richter Jose A. Lucentales and Roxanne A. Lucentales. (PNA) LOR/PR/utb
