ILOILO CITY, June 23 -– Outgoing city mayor Jerry Treñas said that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is more than ready to facilitate the incoming Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) and Barangay elections in October.

Treñas said that there is no need to postpone the polls since the Comelec has ample experience from the national polls last May. He said that the Comelec was created to supervise any election so that there is no point at halting the exercise.

He also said that the government has funds for the barangay polls. Postponing it, even in the congressional level, is out of the question, he said.

Treñas believes that the Comelec’s preparation is more than enough especially that the SK and barangay poll is just four months away. He said that the Comelec could use the time to finalize their preparations especially that the election is smaller in scale and is not automated.

The congressman-elect also said that he will definitely push for the barangay polls to proceed once he is in congress. He said that the people have the right to choose their village leaders and the only way possible is through the barangay elections.

Earlier, the Comelec here called on new voters to register for the October SK and barangay polls. The commission also said that youth ages between 15 and 18 must also register so that they can vote for their SK leaders. (PNA)
