MANILA, June 23 –- The Department of Finance (DOF) on Wednesday began its two-day 1st National Congress on Property Valuation and Taxation at the Hyatt Hotel in Malate, Manila.

With the theme "On Wings of Change: Innovations and Frontiers of the Property Valuation and Taxation Sector", the event is the first and the biggest gathering of stakeholders who are discussing the Government's reform agenda to make the valuation and taxation system more equitable, transparent and effective.

Organizers said Since 2001, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and DOF have been partners in pursuing reform initiatives under the 15-20 years land administration and management (LAM) reform agenda of the Government.

DOF has achieved significant milestones and innovations in various fronts through the 2nd Land Administration and Management Project (LAMP 2), through the technical assistance extended to us by Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)and the funding support of the World Bank.

Based on reports in several media, the incoming administration under President-elect Benigno Aquino III may include land reform in his priority agenda.

Should that be pursued, the business of property valuation will be at the forefront of discussions as DOF continues to pursue the development of policies and relevant systems as a contribution to uplift the economy starting at the local government level.

Finance Secretary Gary Teves, Naga City (Camarines Sur) Mayor Jesse Robredo and Chairman Eduardo Ong of the Professional Regulation Board on Real Estate Service (PRBRES) were some of the speakers. (PNA) V3/JCA
