MANILA, June 21 – Makati City Prosecutor's Office (MCPO) chief Feliciano Aspi on Monday inhibited himself from handling the libel case filed by lawyers of "The Firm" against former Solicitor General Francisco "Frank" Chavez.

In a one-page order, Aspi voluntarily inhibited himself from handling the said libel case.

The MCPO also sent to Department of Justice (DOJ) Chief State Prosecutor Claro Arellano all the records of the case.

According to Arellano, Aspi took it upon himself to inhibit from the libel case such that the lawyers who filed the libel case against Chavez were his "brods" in a law fraternity group.

The lawyers of "The Firm" sued Chavez with libel for his alleged malicious statements in the media, which accused the lawyers of "The Firm" for alleged influence peddling and involvement in illegal transaction.

Meanwhile, the DOJ held a preliminary investigation last June 16 on the libel case filed by Chavez against former Defense Secretary Avelino "Nonong" Cruz, Jr., former Ombudsman Simeon Marcelo and lawyers Raoul Angangco, Arthur Villaraza and Alejandro Alfonso.

The respondents already filed their respective counter affidavits.

Chavez filed the libel case in connection with the alleged statements of the respondents that tend to besmirch his reputation such that "The Firm" allegedly said that Chavez did not win even a single case during his stint as Solicitor General. (PNA) RMA/PTR
