CANDON CITY, June 20 — Lawmakers belonging to the Northern Luzon Alliance (NLA) will most likely support newly-elected Quezon City Congressman Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte in his bid for the speaker position in the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress.

This is according to outgoing House Deputy Speaker Eric D. Singson of Ilocos Sur when he said all NLA members declared verbally their full support to the candidacy of Belmonte for the speakership.

They did this during a meeting convened by Deputy Speaker Singson in Manila and which they will formalize in a resolution they are set to signed if they had not done already.

“Congressman Belmonte, who was officially declared by the Liberal Party as its standard bearer for speaker of the House of Representatives, called me to convene a meeting with him and the incoming lawmaker – members of the NLA," said Singson.

“The congressmen-elect who attended the meeting are from the provinces in Region One, Cordillera Region and Cagayan Valley.

The most prominent ones in that meeting were Congressmen Victor Ortega of La Union and Rodolfo Farinas of Ilocos Norte.

Ilocos Norte Governor-elect Imee Marcos, whose mother Imelda was elected congresswoman of Ilocos Norte, also attended the meeting.

Singson said all those in the meeting expressed their support for Congressman-elect Belmonte as next Speaker of the House.

Singson said that Belmonte is very much qualified to become speaker of the house considering his colorful track records in governance.

“Belmonte is very much qualified as next speaker of the house because he is a lawyer and although in a very short period, already served as Speaker of the House," he added.

On top of that, Belmonte was a long time mayor of Quezon City, the country’s largest city with biggest income generated,” he added.

Singson also clarified that there is nothing wrong for NLA–member to extend their full support for Belmonte considering the fact that LP and Nacionalista Party are about to enter into a coalition.

For his part, newly-elected Ilocos Sur second district Congressman Eric “Owen” G. Singson, who will replace Deputy Speaker Singson, expressed his confidence that Congressman Belmonte will win the speakership. (PNA)
