MANILA, June 6 — Outgoing Makati Mayor and the leading Vice Presidential bet Jejomar C. Binay assured that free school supplies, textbooks and bags regularly provided by the Makati City government to the city’s public schoolchildren are all set for distribution upon the start of this school year.

Binay, whose term will end on June 30, said to ensure timely distribution to students during school opening on June 15, the city’s General Services Department (GSD) has already started to deliver free education materials to the city’s 38 public elementary and high schools as well as 32 preschools located in the elementary schools and the barangays.

“Each year, the city government goes the extra mile to ensure that Makati public schoolchildren promptly receive their allotted school supplies and books and this year is no exception,” Binay said.

The mayor said the deliveries also cover the city’s 32 preschools, of which 24 are housed in the public elementary schools.

The other eight pre-schools are in barangay compounds at Barangays Comembo, Cembo (Guadalupe Bliss), San Isidro, Valenzuela, Tejeros (Tejeros Bliss), Kasilawan, Pembo (Zone 12) and San Antonio.

The distribution of free workbooks, school supplies, school bags and uniforms is an annual undertaking of the city government that began in 1995, in line with the city’s commitment to help parents cope with the rising costs of education materials.

For this school year, 2010-2011, the city government has allotted a total of P408 million for the said program.

It has been increased by P49 million from P359 million the previous year to cover the anticipated rise in enrollment this school year.

Of the P408-million appropriation, the city government has set aside P218 million for textbooks and instructional materials; P51.5 million for school supplies; P68.3 million for school uniforms; P70 million for school t-shirts; and P6 million for school bags.

The city has also allocated P19 million for the schools’ feeding program.

The program began in 2005, with the city government providing underweight students with free meals prepared by nutritionists. Its aim is to improve the beneficiaries’ nutritional status and subsequently, their academic performance.

For his part, DepEd-Makati superintendent Elena Ruiz assured that Makati is ready for the opening of classes on June 15.

Ruiz said Makati’s public schools are capable of holding regular classes on the first day of school, as the city government has always ensured that they have enough teachers, classrooms, chairs and books.

“Problems on classrooms have been long addressed by the city government by providing and constructing additional classrooms and school buildings. When it comes to teachers, we also do not have problems because Makati hires contractual teachers to prevent any shortage on teachers, which happens in other schools,” Ruiz said.

Makati has 28 public elementary schools and 10 high schools.

Meanwhile, Orlando Marquez, chairman of Makati Jeepney Operators and Drivers Alliance Inc. (Majoda) said around 5,000 public jeepneys plying the Makati routes have agreed to offer a one-day free rides to all students at the opening of classes.

Marquez said 32 groups belonging to Majoda and the United Transport Federation of Makati (UTFM) have reached a consensus and approved the proposal to give students from pre-school to college students’ free rides in the city from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“This is just one day of offering help while we get income whole year round from the students. This is our way of showing our appreciation to their contribution to our trade,” Marquez said adding that the one-day treat is in observance of the 340th celebration of Makati Day, a month-long celebration from June 12 to July 12.
