NP expected to support Belmonte speakership bid

MANILA, June 4 — The Liberal Party (LP) and Nacionalista Party (NP) will cross party lines this coming July to elect a common candidate for House Speaker, QC officials said Friday.

QC officials said this is expected because NP Chairman and Former Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. is believed to be supportive of the House speakership bid of outgoing Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., now Quezon City ’s fourth district representative.

Villar, who lost his presidential bid to Belmonte’s presidential candidate, Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino, is reportedly being advised by his partymates to throw his support to Belmonte, a friend and former colleague at the House of Representatives.

Belmonte and Villar were both congressmen during the term of then President Joseph Estrada. Both also had served as Speaker of the House.

Newly-elected Isabela Rep. Ana Cristina Go revealed that Former Senate President Villar is supporting Belmonte in his fight against the Lakas-Kampi-CMD contender, reportedly Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, now congresswoman-elect in her bailiwick in Pampanga, refused to run in the race.

“Speaker Villar will go for Sonny Belmonte. He (Villar) had asked us (partymates) to pledge our support to the speakership bid of Belmonte,” Go said.

“This maybe because they were friends and former colleagues. He (Villar) already knew the qualities of Belmonte as a leader and as a person…being hardworking, smart and dependable,” Go said.

The lady lawmaker said this during a chance visit at Quezon City Hall at the hour of the regular executive staff meeting. (PNA) LOR/JCA
