ILOILLO CITY, June 2 The Commission on Elections (Comelec) here is urging new voters, especially the youth to register for the coming barangay election on October 25.
Comelec assistant regional director Tomas Valera said that the Comelec is now preparing for the October 25 elections even though the central office is still focused on the on-going canvassing of the national polls results at Congress.
Valero said that Comelec hoped that more people will proceed to the Comelec offices for registration, and have their biometrics and voters identification card processed.
He said that new voters should grab the opportunity to get registered.
Comelec is planning to start registry for new voters by July this year. Venues will be announced by the Comelec while most registration will be done per barangay depending on the availability of machines and schedules.
Disenfranchised voters or those whose names were missing in the list of registered voters during the May 10 automated polls can also have their information updated during the registration.
Western Visayas has 4050 barangays in all the 117 municipalities and 16 cities.
The last barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections were done in 2007. Electoral positions up for grab include the barangay head, the councilors as well as the president, vice-president and councilors in the SK.
Valero, however, said that there is a slim chance that the barangay and SK elections will be automated.
He also noted that Comelec will continue issuing voter's ID to all registered voters in the coming months. (PNA) LAP/LPCarnaje
